The Capital Region BOCES Substitute Coordination Service is a centralized service that enables districts to obtain substitute teachers, teaching assistants, and nurses to fill staff absences. The service handles substitute recruitment, interview/reference checks, training, and daily placement of substitutes via an automated system. We currently secure substitutes for over 15 area school districts, including BOCES, on a per diem basis.

An ideal substitute is: self-motivated, outgoing, can follow directions, enjoys working with children, patient, adaptable, and eager to acquire new skills.

Minimum Requirements

The minimum requirements vary by school district.

  • Substitute teachers must have proof of 60 college credits, an associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree, license or certification, depending on the school district.
  • Teacher assistants need proof of high school diploma, a GED diploma, AAS diploma or a New York State Teaching Assistant Certificate, depending on the district.
  • Nurses must have an RN and/or LPN license and current CPR training.
